Practicum

The Internship is mandatory for the students of the Psychology Department. It is an integral part of the Curriculum and is equivalent to 12 ECTS

Objective and Expected Results

The Practicum of the Department of Psychology aims to familiarise students with areas of psychologist’s professional activity in real life contexts and working conditions before obtaining the degree. Students have the opportunity to observe, become aware of and engage, under supervision (under the guidance and responsibility of a certified psychologist-supervisor), in professional activities that fall into the psychologist’s duties (e.g., case history taking, psychological assessment, counselling sessions, interdisciplinary team meetings, etc.). 

Upon completion of the Practicum, students are expected to be able to:
(a) comprehend scientific and professional aspects of the science of psychology and demonstrate the connection between theory and practice;
(b) distinguish the role of the psychologist in a specific context in relation to and in comparison with other professionals in the same context;
(c) comprehend the importance of collaboration between professionals;
(d) have an in-depth understanding of the principles of ethics and deontology in clinical practice, as well as of issues of confidentiality, privacy, etc.
(e) use their theoretical knowledge, training and education background in practical applications in psychology.

General Framework and Academic Requirements

The Practicum is compulsory for all students of the Department of Psychology. It is an integral part of the Undergraduate Studies Curriculum, it takes place in the 7th or 8th semester of studies and is equivalent to 12 ECTS credits. The prerequisite for the compulsory course “Practicum” is the successful completion of all compulsory courses of the Curriculum (accumulation of 90 ECTS credits) as well as of elective courses on Psychology (accumulation of 80 ECTS credits). 

The course “Practicum” is offered in a winter or a spring semester. It includes
(a) the attendance of the Practicum Preparation Seminar, lasting 10 hours,
(b) supervised internship in an applied psychology institution, lasting a total of at least 200 hours, within a period of two months, and
(c) the report of activities (Practicum Book).

The 12 ECTS credits of the course “Practicum” are distributed as follows: eight (8) ECTS credits correspond to 200 hours accomplished at the institution, while four (4) ECTS credits correspond to 100 hours of compulsory attendance of seminar courses (10 hours) and the preparation of the student for the material delivered (90 hours). The Practicum evaluation is graded on a “pass” or “fail” basis, is not taken into account in the overall degree grade but is a prerequisite for the degree and indicated in the Diploma Supplement
