Establishment
The Department of Psychology was established by Law No. 4559/2018. With this law, the former Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (F.P.Ps.), which had been operating since 1984 (Law 1268/1982 and P.D. 445/1984), within the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina and leading to a degree in three tracks (Philosophy, Pedagogy or Psychology) ceased to operate and evolved into two autonomous university departments: the Department of Philosophy, which remained within the Faculty of Philosophy and the Department of Psychology, which was incorporated into the newly established Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ioannina. Upon completion of their studies, students are eligible for License of Professional Practice.
Students are strongly encouraged to pursue further training if they decide to practice applied professional psychology (e.g. clinical, counselling, school psychology).
The new Department of Psychology admitted students for the first time in the academic year 2019-2020, while, making use of the provisions of Law 4559/2018, more than 800 students of the former Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology chose to transfer to it.
